Case Study – Brighton Tri Club
The club wanted to run sea sessions for their members during the summer season, whilst the coaches had the relevant training and qualifications in their field to run these sessions, they felt they could do with a little more training on sea based rescue and wanted us to create and deliver a training session for a group of their coaches to increase their confidence in this environment.
Phase 1 – Understanding the client’s needs
We arranged for a telephone consultation with the head coach to gain some further knowledge on the clubs intended sea-based activities and those that would be taking part in the training. From this consultation we were able to establish:
- How many coaches would be taking part in the training session
- The existing skills, abilities and experience of those taking part in the training session
- The skills and information they felt they would be of benefit to them as well as those we felt would be of benefit
- Potential dates and times all were available
Phase 2 – Creating the training session
Now that we had a deeper understanding of the purpose of the training and the intended audience, we put together a lesson plan, to include pool, classroom and sea-based sessions to be run over a day at the weekend and submitted it to the head coach along with the cost of delivering the session. They then decided to go ahead with booking us.
Phase 3 – Organising the training session
We booked pool space and a training room at the local swimming pool to the club, put together a PowerPoint presentation to accompany our teaching and ensured we had an experienced first aid and lifeguard instructor as well as safety cover in place for each session. We also put together an information sheet for the head coach to pass onto all of those who were attending, with all relevant information including an outline of the day, what to bring with them, tide times, parking etc…
Phase 4 – Running the training session
Our instructors arrived at the venue checked and set up the classroom and all other equipment. The day began with introductions and asking each coach what they wanted to take from the day. Although we had agreed the content of the session, we understood that each coach would benefit from the session in their own way and needed to understand their individual needs as well as the group. In this way, whilst delivering the agreed content, we were also able to tailor the training even further to suit each individual coach’s needs.
Attendance certificates were issued to all those that took part in the training session.
Phase 5 – Review
Feedback forms were completed by all coaches at the end of the day as well as a session review by the safety team and instructor. The information was then compiled by Blue Response and from this we could highlight aspects of the training that worked well/needed improving including content, venue, timings, delivery, safety etc….
As all the coaches felt the training was of value to them and enjoyable, further sessions were booked by the club and the review helped to tweak the training session for future delivery.
